VICE Outfitters vs. DECKED: Truck Bed Drawer Systems Compared

At almost every show, someone asks how our system is different from DECKED. Once they've seen both, the thing people comment on most is that ours isn't stuck as a two-drawer layout.

That's the core difference. DECKED is two drawers under a deck that covers the whole bed. VICE Outfitters starts with a Foundation Plate, and you decide what goes on it, where it goes, and how much of the bed you keep open.

DECKED costs less for a two-drawer setup, and it works in an open bed. Ours needs a tonneau cover or topper, and it costs more with two drawers. For that, you get deeper drawer options, drawers that come all the way out, and a layout you can change later.

Here's how they compare, including where DECKED is the better buy.

First question: is your bed covered?

If your bed is open to the weather and staying that way, buy DECKED.

We build with phenolic-coated Baltic birch. It's the same hex-surfaced plywood used for semi-trailer decks and shipping container floors, so it handles heavy loads and hard use without complaint. What it isn't made for is sitting in rain, snow and sun with nothing over it. Our system needs a tonneau cover or topper.

If your bed is covered, the rest of this comes down to how you use your truck.

Fixed or modular

DECKED gives you two drawers under a full-width deck, and that's the layout for the life of the system. You can organize inside the drawers, but the drawers themselves don't move.

That design has a real upside. The deck is a flat load floor across the whole bed, rated for 2,000 lb evenly distributed. If two drawers and a flat deck is what you want, DECKED does it well.

VICE starts with a half-inch Foundation Plate bolted to the bed. Drawers, crates, bins and cargo trays mount to the plate's grid wherever you want them.

Two drawers side by side is one option. You can also run one drawer down one side and leave the rest of the bed open for bikes, coolers or tall gear. Or start with a single crate and add a drawer next year. When your truck's job changes, you unbolt modules and move them.

Drawer depth and volume

DECKED's full-size drawers are 8.4" deep inside, 316 L for the pair. Canyon Drawers come in three depths:

Full-size, short bed
ConfigurationInside depthTotal volume
Two Short Canyon Drawers6.1"~246 L
DECKED full-size8.4"316 L
Two Medium Canyon Drawers8.1"~327 L
Two Tall Canyon Drawers12.1"~489 L

Two Medium drawers hold about the same as DECKED. Two Tall drawers hold about 55% more, but they stand taller and weigh more. The Short drawers sit lowest. Pick by what you carry and how much bed height you're willing to give up.

Reaching the front of the drawer

DECKED's full-size drawers are 61.4" long and extend 43", so about 18" of drawer stays inside the unit when it's fully open.

Canyon Drawers run on 60" full-extension slides. The entire drawer comes out past the tailgate, so you can reach what's at the front without climbing into the bed.

Capacity and weight

Each Canyon Drawer is rated for 300 lb of cargo. DECKED rates its full-size drawers at 200 lb each.

The tradeoff is that our system is heavier. Two full-size Canyon Drawers plus the Foundation Plate come to 290–332 lb, depending on drawer depth. DECKED's complete full-size system is about 208 lb. That difference comes out of your truck's payload, so factor it in if you already run close to your limit.

Bed height and the load floor

DECKED raises the floor 12.2" across the full width of the bed. You get a flat, rated deck, and everything you load on it rides that much higher.

Ours only adds height where you put a module. The plate itself is half an inch thick. Put one drawer along the side and the rest of the bed stays close to the original floor.

Our drawers aren't always lower, though. A Tall Canyon Drawer stands well above 12.2". The difference is that DECKED's height is bed-wide and permanent, and ours is only where you decide to add modules. If you need a full-width deck for heavy loads spread across the bed, DECKED has the edge.

Installation

The Foundation Plate takes about 30 minutes to install the first time. The plate is your drilling template: you drill eight holes and set plus-nuts, which give you permanent threaded mounting points in the bed. Once the plate is in, a drawer bolts on in about five minutes.

Canyon Drawers ship flat-packed. Plan on 45 minutes to an hour to assemble your first one.

The only tool you need to own is a cordless drill. The drill bits, the plus-nut setting tool and all the hardware come with the system.

DECKED estimates two to three hours to install. On a full-size short bed it uses the truck's existing mounting points, so there's no drilling. If you don't want holes in your bed, that's a real point in their favor.

Price

DECKED is a lot less money for two drawers. Their full-size Drawer System is $1,699.99. A VICE Foundation Plate with two Canyon Drawers is $3,400–$3,570, depending on drawer depth.

Part of that gap is how we build. Every system is built to order, and every panel is cut on our CNC and finished in our shop in Owasso, Oklahoma. That costs more per unit than molding plastic by the thousands.

You also don't have to buy it all at once:

  • Foundation Plate with a Mesa Crate: about $855

  • Foundation Plate with one Canyon Drawer: about $2,000

  • Foundation Plate with two Canyon Drawers: $3,400–$3,570

DECKED's price includes their standard accessory pack. Each Canyon Drawer comes with three adjustable dividers. Other accessories cost extra with both.

If you want two drawers under a flat deck and don't see that changing, DECKED gives you a lot for the money.

Which one should you buy?

DECKED is probably the better fit if:

  • Your bed will stay uncovered

  • You want two drawers and a flat load deck across the whole bed

  • Lower upfront cost matters most

  • You don't want to drill your bed

  • You don't expect to change the layout

VICE Outfitters is probably the better fit if:

  • You already have a tonneau cover or topper

  • You want to keep part of the bed floor open

  • You want a choice of drawer depths

  • You want the whole drawer to come out

  • You want to start small, add modules over time, or change the layout later
